Comics Vs Live Action – PART 2

MARVEL’s AGE OF APOCALYPSE by Scott Lobdell, Mark Waid, Fabian Nicieza, John Francis Moore, Larry Hama, Warren Ellis, Jeph Loeb, Howard Mackie and Terry Kavanagh

Much like Age of Ultron comic storyline, Age of Apocalypse is set in an alternate timeline where the world’s first mutant En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse – basically a mutant god, succeeds in conquering the world. Aside from having a wide array of powers, Apocalypse increases his power via Celestial technology. Born in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago, Apocalypse has always had four loyal followers, ironically named Horsemen of Apocalypse (Pestilence, Famine, War and Death), named after the biblical entities of the same name and has a mutant son named Rolf Williamson/Genocide. Apocalypse is even associated with the mutant mad scientist Nathaniel Essex/Mister Sinister and a cult of mutants, mostly comprised of his descendants called Clan Akkaba.

Just like the AGE OF ULTRON (2015) movie, there was no age of anything in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE (2016), and even though Apocalypse displayed incredible feats of power in the movie, such as using his matter/molecular-kinesis to destroy entire city blocks to build himself a giant pyramid (see video below), he was another major villain with lots of wasted potential and gets killed off in the movie he’s introduced in, like so many other comic villains.

According to the Villains Fandom website, X-MEN APOCALYPSE was going to be named after the comic title ‘Age of Apocalypse’ but was shortened to ‘Apocalypse’ as it didn’t want to be confused with Michael Bay’s TRANSFORMERS 4: Age Of Extinction (2014) and Joss Whedon’s AVENGERS: Age Of Ultron (2015).

Oscar Isaac‘s portrayal of the titular villain was met with mixed to negative reviews and was compared to Power Rangers villain Ivan Ooze.

MARVEL’s CIVIL WAR by MARK MILLAR

In the comics, the CIVIL WAR starts after the superhero team, The New Warriors, apprehend a small group of villains, one of them being Nitro (a villain who can self detonate/explode), and killed heroes Microbe, Night Thrasher and Namorita – Namor the Sub-Mariner’s cousin, along with the other villains Nitro was hiding with and 60 kids.

CIVIL WAR comic storyline is while iconic, it did have a number of problems such as character assassination of many characters such as Iron Man and Capt. America, villains being used to bring in superheroes who were against the Registration Act and the Pro-Registration side led by Iron Man was right, where as the Capt. America Civil War (2016) movie found a good middle ground with teams Pro and Anti Sokovia Accords, where neither side was right or wrong.

While I did enjoy Capt. America Civil War, the only issues for me was that there was no actual WAR, as the main conflict was just a schoolyard brawl/scuffle between 12 heroes and the main conflict wasn’t even in America, but at an abandoned German airport, so the movie can’t call itself “CIVIL WAR”.

In the movie, the Avengers (minus Thor and Hulk) along with Ant-Man, Black Panther, Winter Soldier and Spider-Man were fighting over the Sokovia Accords (Superhero Registration Act in the comics) and Baron Zemo took advantage of the Sokovia Accords to further divide the Avengers, mainly Iron Man and Capt. America. The Sokovia Accords also impacted the tie-in TV show Agents of Shield/AoS.

The MCU should have waited way longer to introduce lots of other heroes and could have made Civil War into a TV series or a movie trilogy and we could have gotten an actual full scale war between heroes.

STAR WARS: HEIR TO THE EMPIRE by Timothy Zahn

One of the best Star Wars stories ever written and part of the Grand Admiral Thrawn book trilogy -which is recognised as the official sequel trilogy to the Original Trilogy, as opposed to the mindless and nonsensical Disney Sequels. Disney is once again taking an iconic story and not even staying true to the original source and the Disney Plus show Ahsoka, helmed by Dave Filoni – who has done almost as much damage to Star Wars as Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy – laid the groundwork for his own version of Heir To The Empire with the Ahsoka show when Ahsoka herself said “Thrawn is Heir to the Empire”.

If you want to see a faithful adaptation of Zahn’s Heir To The Empire, watch Part 1 by DarthAngelus on YouTube (below).

MARVEL’s DAYS OF FUTURE PAST by Chris ClaremontJohn Byrne

Days of Future Past is about the X-MEN trying to save the world after the Sentinels – robots programmed to hunt down, capture and or kill mutants end up turning on humanity as well and are all put into camps.

While there are a few changes made in the movie, it is still a pretty faithful adaption of the comic storyline and the movie is considered one of the best X-MEN movies and one of the best superhero movies put on the silver screen.
